  2. Hi Ryan! I really appreciate your blog guide..I’m writing you from Italy, and I’m ready to start my new blog about interior design and architecture..do you think that is compulsory to write in English or even in my language (Italian indeed) the strategies of promotion and ads are the same?

    • That’s great to hear, Veronica! I’d say the best answer to this question really depends upon how you hope to monetize your blog… if you’re focused primarily (or only) on getting local clients in your town/region for your interior design services, then I could see a strong case for blogging in Italian if that’s the primary language most people in your area are doing their online research/writing in. Otherwise, English has the most broad online appeal, which opens you up to a more global market of potential readers—so if you plan to monetize your blog with other channels (not in-person consulting work), then my gut would be to at least start with English and see how things go over your first few months.

  11. Wow, I’m surprised starting a blog is as easy as this, and I was thinking I’d have to pay someone money to create one for me.

    • Yep! I always recommend the DIY approach to starting a blog to my readers… if you want to have even a basic understanding of how your blog functions, and be able to input your own content over the years, then it’s a worthwhile time investment to set your own blog up and learn how it functions. Good luck with your blog, Paul!

  12. Huge article. Honestly it took over 3 sittings to read it. But I still have a question.
Sorry if I Skipped it in the post. I have a new blog and I want to rank for difficult keywords with high traffic.
Should I create them before or after the low traffic keywords which are easier to rank?

    Reply
    • Good question! In my experience, it’s extremely difficult to rank a brand new blog for difficult keywords that have high traffic—it simply takes time and consistent promotion of the content. It’s not impossible to rank for high value keywords within a couple of months, but something huge usually has to happen (like getting your article featured by hundreds or thousands of high authority news websites/press outlines, landing a guest post on a very high traffic blog/publication, getting someone with a huge social following to share your content with their audience so it goes viral, or otherwise… more on the ways I promote my blog content here: https://staging.ryrob.com/how-to-promote-your-blog/).

I’d recommend choosing a ratio of writing slightly more content that goes after low-medium volume/low-medium competition keywords (say 60-70% of your content for now) in the early days of your blog. That way, if you’re able to write one article per week, you could publish say 1 article per month that goes after higher volume/higher competition keywords that’ll take much more time to rank for.

  16. Well done Ryan, you really hit the nail by the head, in fact, this is the best “how to start a blog” post I have ever come across. But I have a little question, how do you build links, I mean authority links to your blogs.

    • Thanks, Aditya! Really appreciate the praise here. I talk quite a bit (in section #5 about promoting your blog in this guide actually) about the ways I drive traffic/build authority to my blog… both in the years leading up to now, and how I’m still doing it today. I’d recommend starting by re-reading that portion, which starts primarily with guest blogging & getting some contributor accounts with industry/niche-level publications to begin really building a solid online reputation for yourself. That also includes the right social media platforms, using forums/niche communities and forming partnerships with other bloggers in your space. Good luck!

      • Ryan I have another question.
For my game blog do you recommend making an email list or landing page using mailchimp

        Reply
        • Sure! I think Mailchimp is a great starting point (because it’s free for up to 2,000 subscribers), but keep in the back of your mind that you’ll likely want (need) to upgrade to a more robust email marketing tool like ConvertKit—which I personally use and love—once your site begins growing. But for just starting out, you can’t beat free Mailchimp.
